Math Learning Disabilities Defined
There is now a formal definition within the area of
Learning Disabilities that singles out a math
disability. For many years this was referred to as dyscalculia.
However, that term has had a limited definition. The
more recent term, "Math Learning Disabilities" has been
introduced. This definition is the following:
"Mathematics Learning Disability (MD)
are learning disabilities that result from deficits in the ability to
represent or process information used in one or all of the many areas
of mathematics, such as arithmetic, algebra or geometry." (David C. Geary,
Dept. of Psychological Sciences, University of Missouri - Columbia).
