ABC dEcode® and Working Memory Problems

Many people are able to routinely and easily memorize information, especially when studying or receiving directions. This complex skill is taken for granted by many people, but for people with Learning Disabilities, memorizing information can be a major problem. The major problems appear to be:

  • limited working memory capacity, which can be either within the visual area, the auditory area, or both
  • getting information into long-term memory (to remember facts any longer than twenty seconds, information must be transferred from short-term into long-term memory)
  • quickly retrieving information when needed

Young students with memory difficulties can't remember letter names and sounds, which are essential to learning how to read.

As they get older, students with working memory problems will continue to have difficulties with reading, and will begin to struggle in other areas. They may have difficulties with assignments, chores, multiplication tables, or foreign languages. They may learn multiplication tables or vocabulary words one night, only to forget them by the next day. These students may find rote memorization of isolated facts, dates, numbers, or "boring" information especially difficult.
