How is abc dEcode™ different from other phonological programs?

abc dEcode™ is a pre-honics program.

Emphasis is on short-vowel sounds and the consistency of each vowel sound, now matter what consonant comes before or after. Because consistency of sound is stressed, the letter "y" is not included as a vowel. It is introduced as a consonant later in the program.

Each sound, sound combination and exercise must be learned at the one hundred percent level before moving on to the next level. This program is designed as the primary foundation for ultimate reading skills. All subsequent programs are built on this foundation. This foundation must be solid.

Each vowel individually must be learned to the point of "overlearning" before moving on to a new sound. This ensures that each vowel sound is permanently retained in the long-term memory.

At the beginning of the program, consonants will be checked, to find which the student knows or does not know. If there are some consonants the student has problems with, they will be taught singly at the same time as a vowel sound.

It is important that all three modalities are utilized, not just the reading of each sound, but listening to each sound as articulated in the abc dEcode™ Reading Program, and the writing, or if the child is too young, then pointing to each appropriate sound. Listening is equally as important as reading, and should be followed through each level.

Success with the abc dEcode™ Reading Program takes commitment from both student and teacher. Each exercise session should be kept short, from fifteen to twenty minutes, but to see results quickly you should do sessions four or five times a week. (Do not work seven days a week – everyone needs a holiday).

In order for material to become over-learned, repetition is not only necessary but adds to the comfort as new material is retained.

The abc dEcode™ Reading Program begins with teaching the five short vowel sounds. The initial lessons in level 1 cover the short vowel sounds separately and in contrast with each other.

The abc dEcode™ Program includes exercises for virtually every kind of reading preference. No one will ever do all of the exercises provided. As you progress, you will often come to sections that your student clearly does not need. Skip these sections to start at the beginning of the next section.
