Basic elements of ABC dEcode®:

  1. Short incremental steps developing the temporal sequencing of sounds.
  2. Utilization of the three modalities: articulate or "read," listen, and write the symbol accurately.
  3. Thoroughly develop the accuracy of each sound and sound combination, while stressing the order of presentation through an over-learned response, before moving on to the next stage.
  4. Because of the expansiveness of the program, the ability to memorize exercises is minimized.
  5. Since material is "over-learned," to the point where the student gives an unthinking response, the student is able to concentrate on the meaning of words, rather than on the decoding of them. Only after the student's accuracy and speed on a specific exercise has become consistent and impeccable, can the student progress to the next stage of the program. The incremental nature of learning through this program makes the student able to 'read' longer and more-difficult words, and to thereby begin to understand what he or she is reading, rather than agonizing over how to put sounds together.

This program is set up to be completely flexible in use, because individual needs differ. Exercises that are not needed are simply skipped. It is extremely unlikely that any one learner would do all of the exercises provided. However, the exercises are there if needed.

This flexibility means that ABC dEcode® serves readers of all types. Even students without learning disabilities will find ABC dEcode® a fast and painless way to advance their reading skills.

ABC dEcode® is not intended as a substitute for school, or other programs teaching vocabulary, phonic-spelling, or reading comprehension. However, ABC dEcode® will enhance any school experience. As pre-phonic skills are mastered, students can relax, and absorb other work.

New! ABC dEcode® for Kids:

As parents, and grandparents, we want the best for our child's educational future. The latest research indicates the importance of sound to letter connections as the beginning of learning to read.

Children can learn this sound to the letters of the alphabet as early as age 3.

dEcode® is pleased to announce our latest product, "dEcode® for Kids," a simple yet effective way to help your youngster learn his or her sounds.

dEcode® for Kids is made up of a CD, ("Hear the Sounds") and two books ("See the Sounds"). One book for the vowel sounds, the other for consonants.

This version has been developed because of the increasing expectations placed upon younger children to learn to read earlier and earlier.

This package is not a game format. Exercises are fun, brief and effective. The workbooks reinforce letter sound and fine motor skills.

How to use dEcode® For Kids:
“Hear Your Sounds” CD

Begin by letting your child explore. You or your child can click on any picture or letter and you will hear sound - the sound of a child's voice - even on the title page.

Encourage your child to repeat the sound or the word. You may find that your child wants to keep clicking on a particular letter or picture. Let them. This is how the sound to letter connection will take place.

Let your child guide you to the sounds he or she wants to hear. You may want to establish your own routine with your child on a regular basis with rewards put in place.

Remember, this should be fun as well as educational. Since this is for the child who is only 3 or 4, you may find that one to two minutes, three minutes, may be all they can handle initially.

Let your child use the mouse and click to his or her heart's content.

If they keep clicking on a letter, good. That is how they will learn to associate the sound with the letter symbol.

Let your child guide you as to how long they will stay at the computer. Don't force him or her to stay longer than they want to.

“See Your Sounds” booklets:

"See Your Sounds" will supplement whatever sound(s) you are working on.

You may copy a page so your child can do it over and over again.

You may want to trace a letter or a picture. You may want to enlarge a picture. Go ahead! Make it fun. In particular, the printing pages are intentionally designed for the young hand. As a result, there are only a few lines per page.

ABC dEcode® Reading Program:

Until recently, ABC dEcode® was available only to visitors to the Chesnie Cooper Educational Centre. This limited the number of students we could help to those within a restricted geographic area. As our programming is custom-tailored to meet each individual's needs, the time required to work one-on-one also restricted the number of students we could help.

Now, ABC dEcode® is available on CD-ROM. ABC dEcode® guides the student through various decision points to establish a custom-tailored program. Students around the world may now benefit, and at far less cost than coming to our clinic.
