The History of dEcode®
Throughout her many years practicing psychology, Dr. Deborah Chesnie
Cooper has treated people of all ages with a variety of learning disabilities.
Working directly with these individuals, whether in her private practice,
in research, or as founder of a clinic for people with learning disabilities,
she discovered that, for many, traditional teaching methods, specifically
in the areas of reading and math, do not work. In addition, by the
time they reached her, their self-esteem was so fragile that emotional
factors also prevented new learning.
As a result, Dr. Cooper developed a number of programs to address
these areas: dEcode®.
The
ABC dEcode® reading program began
as a supplementary aid, aimed at providing careful, systematic instruction
in the pre-phonic level of alphabetical letter-sound coding skill.
Dr. Cooper discovered that many of her students
required a similar approach to learning for their math skills: many
students, even at the Grade 8 level, did not have their basic fundamental
skills of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. Since traditional
methods taught did not enable some students to retain these facts,
123 dEcode® Math
was developed.
Dr. Cooper further discovered that computational skills alone were
not enough to teach all the other sub-areas within the math curriculum.
She therefore began developing the rule-based system that symbolizes
all the programs we utilize in The Chesnie Cooper Educational Centre,
many of which are for sale through our website.
