ABC dEcode® Reading - Sample Exercises
Below are a couple of sample exercises that illustrate
the dEcode® method of teaching children to read.
The goal is to teach the learner to recognize individual
consonants and vowels, and recognize the relationship between each symbol
and sound.
Each lesson requires that a parent or facilitator be
available to assist the child in taking the exercise.
- Begin by letting your child explore the workbooks and CD-ROM.
- You or your child can click on any letter and you will hear the sound.
- Encourage your child to repeat out loud the sounds and words they
see and hear.
- You may find that your child may want to continue clicking on a particular
sound or image. Let them: Repetition is how one learns.
- Let your child guide you to the sounds he or she wants to hear.
- Remember to give your child rewards as they start to develop the ability
to reproduce the sounds they see and hear.
- Remember that this should be fun as well as educational.
- Keep the time short.
- Correct the learner if they mispronounce the consonant
or vowel.
- Monitor the progress of the learner and move on to
new lessons after the learner has completely learned this lesson.
- Prevent the learner from becoming frustrated if the
lesson is too difficult, by restricting the amount of time on the lesson.
- Select other prescribed exercises within the program
if the child becomes stuck on a particular lesson.
