The focus of the Centre is on remedial intervention rather than
strict tutoring. Although, in many cases, the terms "tutoring"
and "remediation" are used interchangeably, there is a significant
difference in the two approaches. Remediation is the focusing
on the development of a skill or process, rather than the teaching
of content within a particular subject, which tutoring addresses.
Within remedial instruction, the emphasis is on teaching processes
and strategies whether in reading, writing, spelling or math.
For example, if a student is having difficulty with math word
problems, it is important to determine whether these difficulties
stem from a missed lesson (just not being taught new work) or
basic foundation skills, or whether difficulties stem from having
reading comprehension problems, the application of computational
knowledge or organization difficulties. If it is the latter, then
the focus must be remedial.
We are aware that the content of instruction is important, in
that it should be relevant to the student's interests and daily
school work. However, in remedial instruction, it is secondary
to the teaching of the skills which are developed through content.
Once the processes and strategies are in place, the learning of
content knowledge becomes much easier.
Through our extensive assessments, we can determine whether students
require a remedial or a tutorial approach. One-to-one instruction
is offered throughout the day, as well as after school and weekends.
Length of sessions are between 1 to 2 hours once or twice per
week depending upon the individual requirements. In addition,
we offer small group remediation to a maximum of three-to-one
where specific skill requirements are uniform among all participants.

The dEcode Summer Program
The dEcode summer program has been carefully designed to balance fun with learning to ensure your child gets a head
start on the coming year.
The program integrates advanced computer programs and games with basic mathematics and reading decoding techniques
with innovative dEcode teaching methods. Math problem solving skills will be enhanced as fluency in reading
improves.
Your child will be provided with an individualized program targeted to his/her specific learning problems for four
mornings a week during a two week session. You may choose as many of these sessions as you require. The modular
approach of the courses allows you to customize the number of sessions to meet your child's specific needs.
The dEcode staff are all highly-trained professionals in the assessment and education fields who work individually
with your child to ensure he/she receives the maximum benefit from each session.
In order to provide the individualized program your child requires, a basic assessment is given on the first day. We will also be offering our one-to-one individualized remedial program for those requested. |
